Higginbottom Law PC founder James D. Higginbottom, recognizes that even uncontested divorces can be a major source of emotional and mental stress for his clients in their everyday lives. He has also been an active member of the Newport News Bar Association, and a member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity.

In 2020, when many law offices and courts closed down during the COVID-19 pandemic, James recognized the need to make general legal advice and information accessible to more people seeking divorce. To meet that need he founded www.thedivorcecloud.com, an online resource dedicated to providing tools and information for people navigating the divorce process. In early 2021, they rolled out their first tool - "Divorce: Done with You" - which is designed to provide people with all of the documents they need and all of the information they need to file their own uncontested divorce in Virginia for a fraction of the cost of hiring a traditional attorney. The site continues to expand as they work to provide more benefit to their audience.

James is also active in the community. He is a member of Bremond Lodge #241 AF&AM and serves on a number of boards, including the Scottish Rite Foundation of Virginia that helps support childhood speech development programs throughout Virginia, and the Newport News Scottish Rite Foundation that offers a variety of services to the community, including a program to make gently used medical equipment available to those in need. He has also served as a business consultant for Black Creek Workshop, a historic preservation company, that helps preserve and maintain historic sites and structures.
